Actually, the title of this blog comes from the following source: http://www.thepubliceye.org.
It really irritates me that a few men in high places are trying to drag this country into another religious war.
John Blanchard was the coordinator for The Assembly 2007, a Christian nationalist extravaganza led by televangelist Pat Robertson in April of that year. "They did come ashore dragging a cross... We were started as a Christian nation," Blanchard told The Virginian-Pilot newspaper, "and I feel it's God's purpose we stay a Christian nation."
Dragging a cross, eh? Where's the evidence of that, or is it just a metaphor? And where does it say in the Bible that God wants this country, or any country, to be a Christian nation? Not even Jesus made a statement like that. Jesus simply sent his disciples out to spread the word. What word? The word that God loves His children. That is not Christianity. That is common sense. Even the Buddhists teach that. All the rest of Christian theology is based on the Catholic interpretation of what Man should do to be worthy of God's love. The Protestants disagreed on a few points and made up their own interpretation of how to be worthy of God's love. The truth is, God loves us unconditionally, and there is nothing we need to do to be worthy of His love. The point is, as long as we "cling to that old rugged cross" (which is an icon in its own right) or any other religious dogma we will miss the opportunity to know God directly. God is not found in a symbol. God is within, and we are within God. Looking "out there" for salvation based on symbols isn't going to make it.
For someone to make such claims as "... it's God's purpose we stay a Christian nation." is really a mark of low intelligence and narrow-mindedness. It completely misses the point of the Constitution which allows all religions equal footing and place in this nation. We can't be a Christian nation and claim to be free at the same time. One religion means being chained to one dogma. Which shall it be? Mormonism? Protestantism? Catholicism?
Southern Baptism? Or your personal favorite? It also paves the way for more gatherings that smack of Ku Klux Klan activities - if you're not with us, you're against us. And that means war. Religious zealots of this ilk long to find a good excuse to rid their country of anyone who doesn't agree with their flavor of religion and interpretation of the Bible. Isn't that what drove the KKK into its frenzy to kill other humans? The belief that God kills his children when they misbehave is a crock! Unconditional love has no other act but to love. If anyone thinks it was God's will to smite a nation for its bad behavior, they really don't understand what love is.
And yes, there is a faction of Muslims who feel the same way about their religion and their right to rid the land of idolaters, of which Christianity is quite full of (pass the bread and wine, please, while we pray to this image of Jesus on the cross). The Muslims certainly have just as much right to practice their religion in this world as the Christians do, but no religion should cripple any country with claims of "no other religion but ours."
So, when it comes down to "you or me" over religion, we have really gone over the deep end. It's time to stop thinking in terms of "my religion is best" and start thinking that all of Mankind is One in God, not under God. Under God puts God "out there."
When we are not practicing love, we are practicing fear.
If you think you have to be worthy of God's love, then start practicing it. Forgive. Forgive your brother for his mistakes. Forgive yourself for your mistakes. Forgive God of your thoughts that He could deny one of His children the right to be one with Him.
To have love, teach only love, for that is what you are.
